In This Corner: Barry Gusi decisions Manny Pacquiao

Manny Pacquiao’s luck has finally come to an end and his amazing winning streak is over.

After scintillating victories against bigger opponents in Oscar de la Hoya, Ricky Hatton and Miguel Cotto, Pacquiao now suffered his first loss since a close decision to Mexican legend Erik Morales in 2005 and his worst since little- known compatriot Rustico Torrecampo’s wicked left hook knocked him out earlier in his career.

The decisive punch was delivered by the blabbering and fuming Ambassador Barry Gusi who proclaimed the one- sided fight over with less than two minutes left due to a technicality in his speech at the Meralco Theater during the awarding ceremonies of this year’s Gusi Peace Prize.

Barry Gusi whose ambassador title was bestowed by the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas Pacific Islands and the reigning, undisputed chairman of the Peace Prize named after his family wherein he claimed it to be as Asia's equivalent of the very prestigious Nobel Peace Prize declared his fight with boxing’s reigning P4P king as a no- contest in his speech in front of this year’s multi-national awardees many of whom flew into the country at their own expense for the grandiose ceremony.

Gusi was so angered by Pacquiao’s no- show in the awarding ceremony and utter show of disrespect to him even though the boxer sent his Canadian lawyer Michael Koncz to be his representative but the ambassador refused to hand the award to him and reiterated his position that the Filipino boxing icon will no longer be honored by his foundation for the rest of his life.

“They assured me several times that they would attend but they did not show up. No showing up, no award. No respect , no award. No award for the rest of his life because he did not respect the people of the country and the people of the world.”

Such fighting and ironic words coming from a man who name and distribute a Peace award named after his family, if you ask me.

My curiosity was obviously piqued when I read in the papers that a certain Ambassador Gusi was fuming over Manny Pacquiao’s deliberate snub of the affair that I instantly put my fingers to good use and use the power of the internet to find out about the man.

I run into some old articles about him and the Gusi Peace Prize that gave me nothing but just general views. Even the official website’s entries were vague and lacking in details. Heck, it seems that his people even forgot to put him and his works in Wikipedia’s database. Thus being said, I say not really impressive for a man and an award- giving body of this magnitude.

The credentials of this self- proclaimed ‘Internationalist’ are also quite suspect as well as the obscure manner of which he acquired his title as ambassador - at- large of those small groups of islands in the Pacific whose so- called leaders are notorious of giving the said title at the drop of a hat.

But I was impressed with the names of the past and present recipients of the said award that could even compete with the older and well- known Ramon Magsaysay Award. The Filipino past and present recipients alone make a veritable list of the Philippines’ Who’s Who.

Unfortunately at the same time, I couldn’t help but feel sorry for these so- called ‘Peace Laureates’ because in my mind they were just taken for a ride by this eccentric man.

Yes, we cannot deny the fact that they excelled in their respective fields but they were also gullible enough to accept this so- called award that claims to be Asia’s equivalent of the Nobel from this man without even checking his background because they succumbed to that feeling inherent in every one of us which is the need and hunger for recognition.

Although Barry Gusi does not have the credentials nor the pedigree to hand out such awards more so the authority to rank it in the same level as the Nobel Peace Prize but who can blame him when it is obviously an act of self- promotion and a private endeavor for an award that many people bought without question that includes the Office of the Philippine President.

And I salute him for having the audacity, courage and fortitude in putting up this kind of endeavor for not too many people can do this kind of things. Iba talaga ang Pinoy!

But when I found the video below while trolling YouTube the other day, I am now more convinced that Pacquiao’s recent one- sided loss against Barry Gusi should be recorded with an asterisk.

Now you wonder who the real loser and who has the last laugh in this case.

If I'm in Manny's shoes, I will definitely attend this event because of political aspiration. No one can afford a negative feedback, especially when aiming for higher office. If Manny plans to just be a boxer and actor, he could care less. But for public service, it's a different story. All these irrelevant and irritating little social gatherings are already like running his campaign for office. Mr. Gusi and his wife could have been two votes in the bank. Nevertheless, I didn't like the way Mr. Gusi handled himself infront of the audience and guests from different parts of the world. He made Manny looked incompetent by his cheap shots on the microphone. I felt sorry for this guy. There is a way to professionally express your anger and frustration and it's definitely not like the way he did it. I can understand human emotion but he acted like he owns Manny and he is trying to crucify the Pacman infront of the awardees. The least Mr. Gusi could have done was forgive Manny as a token of his appreciation for the great effort Manny has done for the Philippines.

Mr. Blogger, you too were obviously taken for a ride by Barry Gusi for the following reasons: 1. You are one of those who address him "ambassador;" 2. You believe Gusi's reaction ended Pacquiao's winning streak when he was the one who snubbed the award body; 3.You seem ignorant on the hidden agenda of this award giving body.

Before you take this so-called award-giving body seriously, its credibility must first be established - or lack thereof - unmasked. "Ambassador" Gusi is NOT A REAL AMBASSADOR - at least not the officially appointed diplomatic kind. The "honorary," before his title confirms he is NOT THE REAL DEAL - not at all a member of the Philippine diplomatic corps. It takes an assignment to an embassy to be called an ambassador - so that's another red flag that he is not legit. As you stated, this title was confered by some officials of the Northern Marianas which does not have even one embassy, never had - and never will because of its tiny size and lack of standing in the international geopolitical stage.

Any self-respecting blogger writing about the Pacquiao Gusi award flak must first do his or her homework. Gusi is NOT a real ambassador, so what else is left of his award-giving body's credibility? Nada. And with just a little bit of googling anyone can conclude that the Gusi Award raises more questions than recognition. FYI, it gave an award to a disgraced Guam senator who fictitiously claimed to have had a medical degree, so the next story should be Manny was right to snub the award - it was not worthy of attention by someone as internationally acclaimed as Manny. And Manny rightfully did not show up because clearly his people did their homework.

This URL tells you a lot about the Gusi "award credibility" when the Gusi foundation named Jesse Lujan, a disgraced Guam senator who fictitiously claimed he has a medical degree--as one of its 2003 laureate.

Gusi said: "No award for the rest of his life because he did not respect the people of the country and the people of the world.”

Pacquiao's non appearance was a sign of disrespect to his country and to the world??? Gusi Awards represents respect to the world??? Gusi speaks on behalf of the Filipino people and all the citizens of the world?!?!? Am I hearing and reading it right?

The Gusi awards body can NEVER boycott Pacquiao because it was Pacquiao who was first to boycott the Gusi "awards." How can one boycott someone boycotting him?

Gusi's tantrums unmasked no one but himself and his "awards" giving body. No need for Pacman to go up the ring to clobber him because Gusi already clobbered himself in front of his local and international audience.

Ambassador Mach % Me,

It's you who need to reread your own article because you cant see your own contradiction vis-a-vis issues i have pointed out. Laughing at your own inconsistency huh.

mr. anonymous know-it-all,

it's really funny how you miss the point of this article.

ever heard of the term 'satire'?

Indeed, it is really funny how you miss discerning the contradictions in your own article.

Satire? Maybe that's what you have in mind. But having something in mind and failing to project in writing are two different things.

"I can't get your point" and "You can't get your point accross" are two entirely different things.

Moral of the story: Stay out of communication biz if your purpose is to make a mind-reader out of your blog reader(s*) rather than connecting with your readers.

Have a good day "Ambassador" Mach.

(* - uncertain if you have readers other than me)

anonymous know-it-all,

it's amazing that you can write english but your comprehension is very poor. and better brush up on your idioms as well.

it seems that you're the only that is having a hard time discerning the article.

the paragraph below will already give you an idea about mr. gusi. ha-ha. re-read it again and hopefully you will be enlightened.

moral of the story--

i'm a fence- sitter here. but if i were you mr. mach i would not dignify comments by anonymous cowards. besides it's pointless explaining to people who can't grasp the point of the article. i don't know but it seems that their reading comprehension is very poor.

it's people like him who are giving the foreigners the bullets to laugh at us because they're just simply dumb. mind you, there are so many of them in pacland & in michael marley's blog who can't even grasp the essence of what they read and yet bold enough to say dumb, dumb things.

One of the 2010 Guzi Prize laureate (JS from Belgium) was arrested by the police at a Swiss airport in November 2010. This individual has been jailed since (to date i.e. May 2011) and was charged with serious multiple frauds e.g. fake loans.
